Action Track USA 2023 Opener Set For May 7
Stellar Season Scheduled For Berks County Oval
Kutztown, PA (April 24)— Championship Energy Action Track USA waves the green flag on Sunday, May 7, as the 11th season under the management team of Rich Tobias and Doug Rose roars into its 2023 campaign.
The Speedway Entertainment All Pro SpeedSTRs once again headline the weekly menu at the Berks County oval located on the Kutztown Fairgrounds. They will be joined by the uber-competitive Hyper Racing 600 Sprints, along with the All Star and Junior Slingshots.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m. on May 7, as they will on each race date during the ‘23 season. Grandstand gates swing open at 5:00, with warmups slated for 6:15. The hot lap sessions will be followed by opening ceremonies and qualifying heats.
Tim Buckwalter, from Pottstown, PA, captured last year’s SpeedSTR championship, his second track title in that division. Buckwalter won a close point battle over Alex Bright with just one feature win, but he finished inside the top five in six of the year’s nine events.
This season, his closest competition may come from his cousin Steve, who has already recorded a pair of SpeedSTR victories in the Bob Swavely owned, Wheeler Contracting No. 56. Steve Buckwalter also notched the Action Track SpeedSTR point crown in 2020.
Tobias and Rose have authored a stellar schedule for 2023, with a couple annual events taking place on consecutive Wednesdays; May 17 & 24. On the 17th, it’s the Goldie & Elton Meitzler Memorial, followed by the Ronnie Tobias Memorial on the 24th.
On Sunday, June 18, it’s another huge first-time event for the bullring situated across the street from Kutztown University. Rounding out Eastern Storm week, the fire breathing, ground pounding wingless 410’s of the USAC AMSOil National Sprint Car Series visit Action Track USA!
The speedway will be silent for its yearly mid-summer break on June 28 and July 5, as a Folk Festival takes over the fairgrounds.
Racing returns with a clay-spraying event on Wednesday, July 12, as the USAC East Coast Sprint Cars make their first appearance of the 2023 campaign. The 360 non-wing racing machines return on Sunday, August 20, taking part in the Dick Tobias Classic with the SpeedSTRs and 600 Sprints. The All Star and Junior Slingshots will compete in a mid-day matinee event that day, preceding the Tobias Classic.
Tuesday, August 1, will see yet another inaugural event at Berks County’s baddest bullring: the mighty Modifieds of the Short Track Super Series invade Action Track USA for a wild and sure-to-be entertaining night of fierce racing activity.
The Kutztown Fair will run from August 7-12, and racing will once again be a big part of the annual event. The Slingshot Fair Nationals are set for Tuesday, August 8 (vintage Modifieds and the Xcel Mods are also on that night’s docket), while the Xtreme Midget Series makes its Action Track USA debut on Wednesday, August 9. The Midgets at Kutztown produce insanely enjoyable dirt track action, and the Xtreme tour has grown in popularity and caliber of competition, making this show a “must see in ‘23”.
On Friday, August 11, an additional first-time event is penciled into the schedule, with the Winged Fair Nationals taking center stage. The winged 600 Sprints, 270 Micro Sprints, All Star and Junior Slingshots will compete on the progressively banked, ultra-wide clay oval.
As mentioned, the Dick Tobias Classic, featuring the USAC East Coast Sprint Cars, SpeedSTRs, 600 Sprints, and Slingshot classes, will take place on Sunday, August 20.
The season finale, Championship Night, is slated for Wednesday, August 30.
