A Sneak Peak into the Action Track
by Deb Smith
The Action Track at the Kutztown Fairgrounds came one step closer to their May 22nd season opener when they opened their gates for Media Day and gave everyone an opportunity to view the improvements made for the 2013 season.
With Richie Tobias overseeing track maintenance from the inside, Doug Rose was kept busy with competitors and media members who got their first look at the revamped race track and a number of the competitors who will take to the track on Wednesday nights this season.
With the support of their sponsor, JeffreyHogueRealtor.com a number of changes have taken place over the off season. The race track has been reconfigured with the corners extended and the straighaways widened. Most of the competitors were still using the groove from last year but given time, the improvements should lead to more side by side racing in all divisions. A picnic area has been set up off of turn four with plenty of seating for fans to enjoy an evening meal while watching the races.
The Slingshots, both the 270 cc and wingless 600 Micros and the Speedsters were represented. A temporary pit area was established for the day between turns three and four, giving access to the drivers and cars to those in attendance.
Brittany Wixon, Brandon Rahmer, Freddie Rahmer and Paul Lotier were joined in Speedster runs by Kenny Brightbill, Craig VonDohren and Wayne Weaver. Jeff Strunk’s ride was also on display. Jeff Hartman, Brett Schoenly and Doug Snyder took laps with their 600 Micros while Jarid Kunkle, Steve Walters and Tommy Kunsman, Jr. represented the ranks of the 270s. Brett and Travis Bieber and Matt Mertz had their Slingshots race ready while Dakota Kohler represented the Junior Slingshot Division.
The competitors will have one more practice session on Monday evening, May 20th before the season opener on Wednesday, May 22nd with the running of the Goldie Meitzler Memorial.
The Action Track should live up to its name this season and the new race line-up is sure to bring new fans to the Kutztown Fairgrounds for the first time.
